Q: Please state your name, location and occupation?

A: My name is Edgar Montesdeoca aka/Edgar from Summit, N.J. and I am the owner of Edgar Music Entertainment. I’m also a singer, guitar player, DJ, MC and optimist.

Q: How did you begin your music career?

A: It all started with my natural born attraction and passion for music. I always loved listening to the top 40 hit radio stations as a child. And then I always played and listened to my older brother and sisters records which eventually became my hand me downs! Then for no particular reason, I gravitated towards the drums when I was 12 years old and started a career as a drummer in my 20s into my 30s. I played in a handful of established bands including the last one I was in that took a journey in and out of major record deals and numerous shows but sadly, eventually hit a dead end. That’s when I set my sights on singing which I had a desire to be great at. I took vocal lessons every week for 2 years straight in New York City and learned how to play acoustic guitar on my own with a guitar chord book and a few pointers from friends. From those days onward, I was a full-time working musician, that was my only income earning job. I soon after connected with another guitar player and we created a duo act that performed classic rock and popular cover songs up and down the New Jersey coast bar scene for 7 years. Within the next 15 years to present, I have created my music entertainment company.

Q: It sounds like there were a lot of plot twists and turns to get where you are today. How did you navigate that with grace?

A: I’ve dealt with a lot of changes and diversity throughout my life since childhood. My easy going nature made it easy for me not to take anything personally. Humans are difficult, lol. I’ve always been friendly, polite and easy to get along with. I wear my heart on my sleeve and sometimes to a fault, but in the long run, just simply being who I am, being true to myself and kind and honest to people has taken me to good places and gotten me through the toughest times in life and business.

Q: What prompted you to build this huge entertainment business?

A: At a crossroad in my musical life and personal journey, the business entrepreneur in me just knew that there was a need to grow financially. And the artist in me knew I needed to let go of some creative attachments in order to achieve that. It wasn’t an easy balance or transition. But I didn’t want to be relying on only myself and my own musical talent in the field to make an income. Especially if something were to happen to me and I couldn’t physically work. So my long-time love and support of the live music community, artists and entertainers gave me the incentive to know that I can create a balance, and thus continue to create in a whole new way while creating a team that works together for the same goals: to make a living doing what we love and are are good at while also pursuing our other artistic dreams. I keep a lot of people working now which makes me feel extremely happy and accomplished and it’s a win-win for everyone. We make a living and make people very happy with our music and talents.

Q: You have a ton of entertainers available on your website! How do you find talent and how many are there?

A: There are some amazing entertainers on our roster. I’d say there are approximately over 50 entertainers and bands collectively not including the DJs. When I set my sights on building a company of the best musicians and DJs I could find to offer to the public, I took my time and handpicked each and everyone of them. It started as a nucleus of five musicians and a couple of DJs and from there, expanded through our inner network and referrals and my continuous eyes and ears on the scene talent searching.

Q: What does event enhancements entail?

A: A lot of fun services and items such as a variety of trendy photobooths like the magic mirror and the duo booth, uplighting, concert lighting, TV montages, magicians, monograms, cinematography and more!

Q: What is the scene like on the East Coast currently?

A: Most of the East Coast, and where we live and work in our NJ area particularly, has as always been a wealth of opportunity for working musicians in bars and restaurants. And then on top of that all of the private events and weddings and celebrations seem to never slow down. However, Covid of course brought us to a screeching halt and impacted us greatly and many of us in the entertainment service industry and hospitality industry didn’t survive, unfortunately. Those of us who were able to hang in there were steadily rebuilding. And now, ever since the beginning of June 2021 when restrictions were lifted, the flood gates opened wide. Existing and new bars/restaurants, private events of all kinds are abundant. People want to party again! We all have been happily overwhelmed, super busy and working as much as we ever have. We’re hopeful that we have faced the worst and looking forward to a steady flow of a lot more celebrations!

Q: What advice would you give someone just starting out?

A: Well, that’s a tough one. It’s a whole different world right now and a lot of dynamics and strategies have changed a lot in as little as 5 years. We and our prospective clients practically live in a world of Internet and online marketing and it is essential for success. It’s not like how when I started out where word of mouth and loyalty was a huge part of business success along with print ads. However, I think two important words of advice I can give is to be aware of and learn the tools you have to work with in this internet based world of marketing. Then, you still need to meet and greet, face to face. Client relations and referrals still go a long way and are very important, so you have to build that clientele base first on a human level. And then it all boils down to dedication, belief and passion in what you are doing and selling, and truly loving what you do.

Hanging with mermaids at an event, it’s a hard job but someone has to do it!

Q: How many years would you say it takes to make it in your business?

A: For me, I believe you have to balance hard work and play otherwise it is not a healthy lifestyle. So, If you work hard and consistently and efficiently and always keep happiness and health as a priority too, you can see some significant results and success in a matter of less than 5 years and then with that formula you will continue to grow for years to come.
